Swayambhunath meaning self-created, one of the most popular, holy and historical site of Kathmandu. This stupa is situated at hill top, 20minutes walking distance from Thamel. Monkey temple is another name of this temple because of large number of roving monkeys. The surroundings of Swayambhunath Stupa consist of chaityas, temples, painted images of deities and numerous other religious objects. According to legend 2000 years back Kathmandu valley was a great lake. Many lotus flowers grew on the lake and a single huge lotus flower bloom in the center of the lake. Many people attract to see those lotus flowers. Mean while the bodhisattva Manjushree came and slash the Chovar hill from his magical sword, started to drawn all the water from the gorge and Kathmandu valley was suitable for human inhabitants. The lotus flower settled on top of the hill and magically transformed into the stupa. Thus it is known as the Self-Created (swayambhunath) Stupa.

At times when the weather is clear and if luck is on your side you can even see the mountain ranges. Once you get within minutes you can see the edifice stalling tall in a small hill.
